CPI (M-L) threatens stir against hike

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party India (Marxist-Leninist) on Tuesday demanded the immediate withdrawal of the hike in petrol and diesel prices. It threatened to launch a countrywide demonstration in protest against the hike.

Polit Bureau member Swadesh Bhattacharya charged the United Progressive Alliance Government with imposing an "American-sponsored price hike" on the people. The move would hit the common people as it would lead to an increase in the prices of other essential commodities, he said.

In a separate statement, Communist Party of India leader Atul Kumar Anjaan said the hike would affect the people living in rural areas and also the small and marginal farmers. "As it is the cost of agricultural inputs is going up. Now the small farmer, who tries to make ends meet by using diesel for farm operations, would have to reduce its usage, which would directly affect employment of agricultural workers. This, in turn, would lead to migration."

Mr. Anjaan, former party national secretary, said the Government should also explain why the country did not trade when the oil price per barrel was around $40.
