Left pleads for relief to fire victims

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Left parties demanded that proper relief be extended to victims of the Monday fire accident at Tarakarama Nagar near Krishnalanka in the city. Over 200 thatched huts were destroyed in the fire due to soaring afternoon temperatures and the winds.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) secretary, Ch. Babu Rao, said on Tuesday that an immediate relief of Rs. 5,000 should be extended to the people who had lost their huts in the fire. He also sought an amount of Rs. 2,000 as relief to those who were living as tenants.

Proper relief measures

Mr. Rao said the residents were rendered homeless and had to take shelter on the streets with whatever belongings they could retrieve from their burning houses. He demanded that the Government construct permanent houses for the affected families in the same place.

A team led by Mr. Rao met the Sub-Collector, Buddha Prakash Jyothi, and requested him to extend immediate and proper relief to the affected families.

A team of CPI leaders comprising P. Surya Rao, V. Nageswara Rao, S. Shakuntala, Sitarama Rao and others met the Sub-Collector and submitted a memorandum for taking up proper relief to the affected families.
