THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Pro-LDF trade unions in the State have decided to organise a general strike on July 5 to protest against the `anti-worker' policies of the Central and State Governments. Teachers and State Government employees also have decided to join the strike. The demands of the trade unions include protection of the right to strike work, scrapping of moves to privatise pension schemes, raising of PF interest rate to 12 per cent and complete withdrawal of the recruitment ban. The joint action council of trade unions would take out four regional jathas on June 23 to spread the message of the strike. The northern regional jatha, to be led by CITU State general secretary P. K. Gurudasan, would begin from Kasaragod and conclude at Kozhikode. The southern regional jatha, to be led by the AITUC State general secretary C. Divakaran, would be inaugurated by Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan at Aroor. It would conclude in Thiruvananthapuram on June 27. The rally marking conclusion of the march would be inaugurated by CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan. The two Central regional jathas would be led by CITU leaders M.M. Lawrence and K.M. Sudhakaran. C.H. Asokan, general secretary of the CPI(M)-led Action Council of State Employees and Teachers, and M.N.V.G. Adiyodi, general convener of the CPI-led Joint Action Council of Teachers' and Service Organisations, said in a statement here on Tuesday that State employees and teachers would join the strike.
