16 students injured in building collapse

ADIMALI (Idukki dist): Sixteen students were injured, three of them seriously, when the wall of a school building under construction collapsed. According to the police, the accident occurred at around 3.30 p.m. on Tuesday when the new building of St. Mary's School at Adimali collapsed. It was raining heavily and there was strong wind. The students were standing near the wall which was under construction when concrete bricks came down. Most of the students suffered injuries on the head. Those seriously injured have been moved to hospitals at Kothamangalam. Six of them were admitted to local dispensaries, the police said. — Staff Reporter

Accounts of donations sought

Kochi: A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the State Government to produce the accounts relating to the donations received by it toward the tsunami victims' relief fund and also the amount spent on relief operations. The Bench comprising Chief Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan issued the oral directive when a writ petition filed by Mr. Sivadasan and eight others from Alappuzha came up. According to the petitioner, though a huge amount had been received by way of donations, the Government had spent only very little of it for the relief operation. The Government had diverted funds for other purposes in many areas not affected by tsunami, the petitioner alleged. — Staff Reporter

Model receipt released

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The model of the receipt that will be issued by Government offices for complaints and applications submitted to it has been released. The receipt, which contains the name of the office, place, date and number, will be signed by the official concerned. The Government has asked the offices to exhibit the order regarding the issue of receipts in Malayalam prominently near the general enquiry counter. The board, which will announce that receipts will be given for complaints, memoranda and applications, will also contain the details of the official empowered to issue the receipt and the official to be contacted if the receipt is not issued. - Special Correspondent

Takeover of ESI hospitals likely

KOLLAM: The Director General of the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Ajay Dua has said that the demand for an ESIC takeover of the ESI Hospitals at Udyogamandalam and Feroke under the Model Hospital Scheme will be considered if a proposal is received from the State Government. He made the point while addressing a gathering after inaugurating the new dental unit of the ESIC Model Hospital here on Monday. - Staff Reporter

Thrissur: The Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has said that indigenous knowledge is essential in conserving Nature and biodiversity. Inaugurating a workshop on `Conservation and sustainable management of belowground biodiversity,' the Minister said that traditional knowledge should be used to alleviate human misery and improve quality of life. - Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: Members of the Kerala Students' Union laid siege to the Canara Bank West Palace Road Branch here on Tuesday in protest against the alleged problems in getting student loans.
