KOTTAYAM: The budget session of the Nair Service Society (NSS) scheduled for Wednesday, being the first major session of the body after the highly successful Nair Mahasammelan in Thiruvananthapuram marking the conclusion of the Navathy Year, has raised interest among political watchers. The NSS, though not directly involved in politics, had always asserted its right to comment on and if necessary, interfere indirectly, in political developments in the past. One of the issues that the NSS had taken up repeatedly during recent times was the issue of educational policy followed by the successive State Governments. The Government's retreating from the public instruction system and the issue of the wealthy entrepreneurs from certain sections of society usurping that space, has been viewed with alarm by the largest corporate management in the State. The NSS has already expressed its reservation to the recent policy initiatives by the Government, which according to them, clearly demonstrated the tilt in favour of private unaided institutions. The budget session may come up with a sharp criticism of the state of affairs in the education system and a call to scrap it and to restore the Government's involvement in the education sector so that the weaker sections and economically backward would not be pushed out of the net. In the light of the success of the solidarity move between the NSS and the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam, the NSS leadership is likely to take the occasion to reiterate its commitment to further the unity efforts among the different organisations representing the majority community. With more and more organisations coming out with their intention to follow a "policy of equidistance," the original proponent of thephilosophy may augment its strength for more effective implementation of their programmes. The leaders may also use it as an occasion to take stock of the internal situation of the organisation.
