ALAPPUZHA: Residents of Vattayal area in Arattupuzha panchayat in the district blocked Thottappally-Valiyazheekkal coastal road on Tuesday evening and gheraoed the Chenganoor RDO C.V. Thomas who arrived on the scene. The people were protesting against the alleged failure of the authorities to construct seawall along the coast of the panchayats and the flaws in the relief works being carried out in the panchayats for the tsunami victims. Though Mr. Thomas had come to in the area after removing official signboard from the car, the people identified him and blocked him. Mr. Thomas was released by 7 p.m. following assurances from the authorities that problems faced by the people would be solved soon.
Seawall needed
The Arattupuzha panchayat president P.N. Viswanathan told The Hindu that the entire panchayat would be wiped out by tidal waves if the Government failed to construct the seawall immediately. He said Tottappally-Valiyazheekkal coastal road had been severely damaged in the sea erosion.
