KURNOOL: Leaders of the CPI(M), the CPI and the TDP protested against the hike in the prices of petroleum products here on Tuesday. The CPI(M) organised a rally to the Collectorate and staged dharna while the CPI conducted a road blockade at Raj Vihar Centre. Leaders of the CPI(M) paraded two-wheelers on bullock carts and raised slogans against the hike in prices. Autorickshaw drivers pulled the three-wheelers with ropes and protested. The CPI State committee member, Ramakrishna, said the Government had done away with the oil pool account, which was meant for absorbing fluctuations in the international prices. The Telugu Yuvata State vice-president, S.V. Mohan Reddy, and the Zilla Parishad Chairman, B. Venkatramudu, found fault with the Centre for increasing the prices abnormally.
Effigy burnt
Cuddapah reporter writes: Telugu Desam Party functionaries staged dharna and burnt an effigy of the Union Petroleum Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, before the Collectorate on Tuesday, demanding rollback of petrol and diesel prices. They garlanded NTR statue and came in a rally to the venue. The TDP Polit Bureau member, K. Sivananda Reddy, district vice-presidents -- P. Brahmaiah and M. Venkataswamy -- and others deplored the hike in prices. Activists of the CPI staged a rasta roko at ITI Circle criticising the hike. The CPI town secretary, G. Chandra, and other leaders demanded rollback of the price. Nellore Staff Reporter adds: Functionaries of the CPI(M) staged a dharna at Gandhi Statue Centre, Trunk Road, in protest against the hike.
