VISAKHAPATNAM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Left parties and trade unions organised protest demonstrations in the city on Tuesday against the hike in petrol and diesel prices.
Effigies burnt
Processions and rasta rokos were conducted and effigies of the United Progressive Alliance Government were burnt amidst slogans against the Petroleum Minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar. The BJP city unit president, Bandaru Rangamohana Rao, the party's National Council member, P.V. Chalapathi Rao, and the secretary, K. Haribabu, criticised the Central Government for increasing the price of petrol by nearly Rs. 10 in the last one year.
BJP dig at left parties
The BJP leaders accused the CPI(M) of double standards. The CPI(M) district committee secretary, M.V.S. Sarma, asked the Centre to immediately withdraw the hike in petrol and diesel prices. The communist parties would launch a nation-wide protest on June 28 if the hike was not withdrawn, he said.
CITU march
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions organised a protest march and conducted a rasta-roko in protest against the hike. A cycle rickshaw pulling an auto led the protest march, to explain the plight of autorickshaw drivers due to the hike in prices. The CPI city council conducted a rasta-roko at Dondaparthi junction.
