CPI(M) leaders protest against larger-than-expected petrol price hike

PULLING IT ON: CPI(M) leaders taking out a procession on bullockcarts in protest against the oil price hike at Nalgonda on Tuesday.

NALGONDA: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday took out a procession with bullock carts in protest against the United Progressive Alliance Government's decision to effect a larger-than-expected hike in the prices of petrol and diesel.

The procession, led by the district committee secretary, Ch. Sitaramulu, and the former MLA, N. Narasimha Reddy, covered the main thoroughfares in the town before culminating in a roadside meeting at the Gandhi statue in Ramgiri.

The party leaders -- Anantarama Sharma, T. Veera Reddy, Badini Chennaiah, Sd. Hashim, K. Satyanarayana, Nagaiah -- took part in the symbolic protest. While CITU activists participated in the march pushing their scooters and motorbikes, the CPI (M) leaders put a couple of two-wheelers on the bullock carts to show their ire.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Sitaramulu criticised the Government for increasing oil prices, turning a deaf ear to the advice of the Left parties. "The UPA Government did not consider alternative proposals put forward by our leaders. This Government is also going the BJP-lead NDA Government's way," he observed, asking cadres to be ready to fight against anti-people policies.

Mr. Narasimha Reddy said the people in the State were being burdened to the tune of Rs. 1,000 crores every month by the UPA Government.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders spearheaded by the party district unit secretary, Veerelli Chandrasekhar, staged rasta roko at the RTC bus depot. The party activists formed a human chain around the Subash Chandra Bose statue to bring the traffic a grinding halt. They raised slogans against the rise in oil prices.

The police arrested seven leaders including Chandraskehar and Madhusudan Reddy when they continued the protest programme for more than an hour.
