Bangalore: The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, has written to the Union Health Minister, Anbumani Ramadoss, and the Medical Council of India (MCI) for expediting the applications for opening give new government medical colleges to accommodate meritorious students and those belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Iqbal Ansari, Minister for Medical Education, who attended a meeting convened by N. Cheluvarayaswamy, Health and Family Welfare Minister, on upgrading government hospitals in seven new districts hoped that the proposed colleges in Mandya, Hassan and Belgaum may get MCI approval. MCI has refused to give approval for the college in Shimoga as it was submitted late. For the two other colleges in Bidar and Raichur, the Government is making efforts to get the approval this year. Since a few private colleges have been permitted, 50 per cent of the seats from them will be added to the government quota.
Hospital upgradation
Mr. Cheluvarayaswamy said that the new hospital buildings will be built in Chamaranagar and Koppal districts and separate plots of five acres and 10 acres have been allotted for them respectively. In Chamarajanagar, the veterinary hospital will be handed over to his department for the new hospital and the veterinary hospital will be shifted. The 10-acre land allotted in Haveri is away from the town. In Gadag, the land has not been handed over to the department.
