Bandh in Hospet peaceful

Staff Correspondent

BELLARY: Hospet city observed a near total bandh on Tuesday in response to a call given by the Forum of Pro-people Organisations demanding better facilities at the 100-bed hospital and action against the doctor of a private nursing home in connection with the death of a woman. The bandh was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the city.

Life in the city came to a halt and the city wore a deserted look as all shops and business establishments downed their shutters. Passengers were stranded at the bus stand as Karnataka State Road Transportation Corporation withdrew bus services. The attendance at government and semi-government offices and banks was thin.

Procession

A procession was taken out from the hospital, which passed through the main streets of the city. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the Hospet MLA, H.R. Gaviyappa.

Their demands included steps to upgrade the 100-bed hospital, providing better medical facilities, ensuring that the emergency ward functions round the clock, and the filling of vacant posts of medical and para-medical staff.

Mr. Gaviyappa said that he has taken up the matter with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and other ministers. He said they had assured him that doctors will be appointed to the hospital immediately.
