LUCKNOW: A local court here on Tuesday rejected the bail application of the former Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister, Markandey Chand, and his nephew, Abhishek, the prime accused in the murder of a former BJP MP and his driver. Mr. Chand and Abhishek were arrested on Monday morning from their Gorakhpur residence. Later, they were presented before a magistrate following which a Lucknow police team brought them here for interrogation on transit remand. Both the accused are presently lodged in jail under judicial remand. Meanwhile, the application filed by the duo seeking a change of charge from section 307 of the IPC to section 507 will be heard tomorrow. The former MP, Lakshmi Narain Mani Tripathi, and his driver, Nandu, were shot dead on Sunday night by two assailants at his Vikas Nagar residence here. Mr Chand, a Minister in the Rajnath Singh Government, and his nephew were arrested after Chandrakanti, wife of the slain BJP leader, lodged an FIR charging them with the murder. The SSP (Lucknow), Navneet Sikera, said the incident was a fallout of a rivalry over coal contracts between the two families. The former MP had represented Kaiserganj Lok Sabha constituency in Baharaich during 1991-96. He later joined the BSP before making a comeback to the BJP just ahead of the last General Elections.- UNI
