BJP likens Rampur to Ayodhya

"Mulayam Singh Government trying to foment communal tension in the State''

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh BJP unit on Tuesday criticised the Mulayam Singh Yadav Government in the State for allegedly trying to communalise the situation in Rampur in the wake of the removal of the statue of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya there.

``The situation in Rampur is just like it was in Ayodhya during the Ram temple movement when the SP leader was the Chief Minister,'' State party president, Keshri Nath Tripathi, here said.

Criticising Rampur authorities for arresting senior party leaders - Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Lalji Tandon and others - this morning when they were trying to hold a ``peaceful satyagrah programme'' there, Mr. Tripathi said, ``undeclared curfew has been clamped there.''

``Arrest of BJP workers from different parts of the State proves that the SP Government is trying to foment communal tension in the State,'' he alleged.

Talking to media persons, the BJP leader alleged the CM was also not keeping his promises made to leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Mr Tandon, to re-install the statue at the same site. ``Mr Yadav reversed his decision on the pressure mounted by State Urban Development Minister Mohd Azam Khan,'' he added.

Mr Tripathi claimed over 2,000 party workers had been arrested in different parts of U.P. during the week-long 'satyagrah', who included over 150 people belonging to minority communities in Rampur alone.

Accusing Mr. Khan of being behind the issue, he said the Minister was trying to provoke the people against re-installation of the statue at Rampur. -UNI
