Concern over cerebral malaria deaths

NEW DELHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Vijender Kumar Gupta, on Tuesday expressed grave concern over the death of two patients reportedly due to cerebral malaria.

In a letter to the Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Gupta demanded an enquiry into the matter so that necessary steps could be taken to prevent the deadly disease from spreading. Alleging that the Congress-ruled administration had failed to initiate steps to prevent the recent outbreak of meningitis in the Capital, Mr. Gupta said there was a grave danger of the outbreak of dengue and cerebral malaria during the upcoming monsoon.

Meet on development of Uttaranchal

NEW DELHI: More than 300 engineers, policy makers, planners and architects would take part in a seminar on "Safety and Quality Development of Uttaranchal" here this Friday.

Organised jointly by the Safety and Quality Forum of India and the Institution of Engineers, the seminar will be inaugurated by the Union Power Secretary, R.V. Shahi.

Besides discussing resource-based plan for development of the State, the seminar will also identify areas for water resource management, hydroelectric generation and tourism development.

Customer relation programme

NEW DELHI: A customer relation programme was organised jointly by the Excise Department of the Delhi Government and the State Bank of India at Park Hotel here on Parliament Street this past week.

The programme coincided with the launch of an online payment facility for excise and entertainment tax through Internet banking.

In his address, the SBI General Manager, N. Raja, said the progress made by the bank in the information technology sector would help it to provide better services to its customers.

Delivering the keynote address, the Commissioner of Excise and Entertainment Tax, Keshav Chandra, lauded the bank for providing such services and expressed the hope that it would provide larger connectivity in future.

Seminar on rural administration

NEW DELHI: A national seminar on "Transparency and Accountability in Rural Administration in India" will be organised jointly by Jan Kalyan Upbhokla Samiti and the Indian Institute of Public Administration here on Friday.

A large number of farmers from western Uttar Pradesh will participate in the seminar that would discuss the various provisions of the Right to Information Bill.

The Minister of State for Personnel Public Grievances and Pensions, Suresh Pachouri, will inaugurate the seminar, while the Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha, Yogendra Narain, will inform the farmers how they could benefit from the Bill.
