MANGALORE: A committee of experts constituted by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy to study the aspects related to inclusion of Tulu as a medium of instruction in education, has suggested that for the time being Kannada script should be used to teach Tulu. The committee held its first meeting here last weekend after the President of the academy, M.K. Seetharama Kulal, constituted the committee, according to a release issued by Duggappa Kajekar, Registrar of the academy. Members of the committee felt that Tulu has to be included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution if Tulu was to be introduced as a medium of instruction in primary and high schools and (Tulu) as a subject in degree courses. As efforts to include Tulu in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution are on, the committee decided to frame different syllabus during the next one year for various levels. The syllabus should also contain lessons on Tulu script. The meeting decided that the academy should start a certificate course to teach Tulu. An action plan in this regard should be submitted in the next meeting of the committee. Besides, it should organise programmes for the promotion of Tulu script. The committee members said that the academy should hold workshops for primary and high school teachers to make them create an interest among students to learn Tulu. The members requested Tukaram Poojary, member of the panel, to prepare an action plan on works to be taken up by the academy to inspire students to learn Tulu. Amrut Someshwar, president of the committee, Gananatha Shetty Ekkar, convener, K. Chinnappa Gowda and Vamana Nandavara, members, and president of the academy, Mr. Kulal, participated.
