Teachers `should be quality conscious'

Aludia Pillai favours dismantling of affiliation system in higher education Accreditation processes will facilitate international exchanges

CHENNAI: The former Vice Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, Aludia Pillai, has favoured the phased dismantling of the affiliation system in higher education.

Addressing a two-day orientation programme for the 60-member faculty of Alpha Arts and Science College, Porur, on Monday, Prof. Pillai, said that the demands of higher education were such that only quality would ensure survival.

He encouraged teachers to be quality conscious. The programme was organised as a prelude to the new academic year and included an hour-long interactive session.

Replying to a question about international recognition of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in the background of the GATT/WTO provision that foreign players can enter the Indian educational field, Prof. Pillai said accreditation by NAAC met International Standards of Evaluation and certain universities abroad borrowed these practices.

Such accreditation processes would help create a level playing field in the international arena and facilitate international exchanges and tie ups.

The former Central Vigilance Commissioner, N. Vittal, stressed the need for teachers to keep abreast of modern technologies and highlighted the important qualities to be nurtured and developed.

He said that with the advent of globalisation the onus was on the teacher to widen the knowledge base. Stressing the value of integrity, he asked teachers to impart professional ethics and inculcate basic values among students.

The biggest challenge facing a teacher was recognising the changes taking place in the social environment and employing technology to cater to these changes, he said.

The principal, Dr. K.P. Johny and the Language Head of Department, Kamalaveni, also spoke.
