Fernandes shocked at RSS letter

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Janata Dal (United) president, George Fernandes, on Tuesday expressed shock over the letter written by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief, K.S. Sudarshan, praising Indira Gandhi and said any appreciation of her amounted to "endorsement of dictatorship.''

"I was shocked to read your statement that the RSS admired Indira Gandhi, though you are right when you say that Pandit Nehru was responsible for all problems facing the country,'' he said in a letter to the RSS chief.

Mr. Fernandes said Indira Gandhi chose to be a dictator only to remain in power when the people rallied against her. He argued that hailing her Prime Ministership would mean an endorsement of dictatorship.

He wondered how the RSS could admire a person who went to the extent of saying that her "emergency rule'' meant that even the right to life had been withdrawn, "as Hitler had done in Germany.'' He alleged that it was Indira Gandhi who "injected corruption into the nation's polity" that made him call her `Bhrashtachar ki Gangotri' (fountainhead of corruption) "inside and outside the [Parliament] House."
