BJP stance on Muslim quota flayed

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has dismissed Bharat Janata Party's (BJP) criticism of the Government's decision to implement five per cent reservations for Muslims in employment and education.

It said the BJP fought the last Assembly elections with the Telugu Desam Party which had also promised a three per cent quota for Muslims in its manifesto.

"If the BJP was opposed in principle to the reservations for Muslims, it should have fought elections independently," the Government Chief Whip, N. Kiran Kumar and some Congress MLAs, said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

`No ulterior motive'

Denying that the Congress Government had any ulterior motives behind the move, they said the reservations were sought to be implemented during the previous academic year but the Court had struck down the order.

They said there would be no dilution of the quota for Muslims by including them in the BC `E' category since this would be in addition to 25 per cent reservation for the A,B,C & D categories.
