HYDERABAD:
Heads of over a dozen maths who met here on Tuesday under the auspices of the Temple Protection Committee resolved to launch an agitation to protest against the Government's attitude and that of the Endowments Department. The demands of the religious heads were scrapping of the Endowments Act, an enquiry into the controversy pertaining to the sale of temple lands and payment of a compensation of Rs. 500 crores to the temples for the loss they had suffered in the past 17 years since the deterioration of the set-up.
The meeting resulted in the constitution of a committee of `peetadhipathis' with Swami Swaroopananda of Sarada Peetham as convenor and it resolved to launch an agitation until the demands were solved. A `sammelan' is to be organised in Guntur on July 12 for more discussions.
The Andhra Pradesh Archaka Samakhya has decided to launch an agitation from July 1 opposing the Government's decision to sell temple lands.
