Special team formed to curb sandalwood thefts

Those having sandal trees should contact police

COIMBATORE: : The City Police have formed a special team to prevent sandalwood tree felling. The City Police Commissioner, Karan Singha, told reporters here today that the patrol vehicles doing night rounds would be asked to keep tab on premises that had sandalwood trees.The City Police would seek the help of the Forest Department in locating premises having sandalwood trees. The police will ask house owners to give details of sandal wood trees on their premises in a week. The City Police will seek the help of the Palakkad police and the Forest Departments of both the States to keep tab on oil extraction units that strived on smuggled sandalwood, the Commissioner said.

Drive against speeding

The City Police have stepped up their speed trap tests on arterial roads with the help of moder speed radar gun. It would give an instant print out mentioning the speed of a vehicle thus enabling quick and fast prosecution. The City Police with the help of sponsors would procure more guns.

Ambulance service

The ambulance service of the City Police has been revived and these vehicles fitted with wireless would be stationed at the control room. It would provide service free of cost in case of accidents. During the last five days, these ambulances had lifted 11 injured persons to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Mr. Singha said.

Traffic regulation

The City Police have decided to take precautionary measures to ease traffic snarls during heavy rain, the traffic police would take care of the traffic junctions and the law and order staff and patrol vehicles would take care of routes, Mr. Karan Singha said.
