Two held on abduction charge

KOCHI: Two persons were arrested on Tuesday by the Ernakulam Town North Police for kidnapping a boy and keeping him in detention for settling an outstanding due.

Those arrested have been identified as Thankaraj, 42, of Pallikkara in Kunnathunadu and Abdul Salam, 27, of Palakkad.

The police said that Thankaraj had provided chicken to the meat centre run by Jai Singh, residing at Asoka Road in Kaloor. However, when the latter defaulted payment to the tune of Rs. 2 lakhs, the accused kidnapped his son, Amar Singh, 15, from his residence on June 13 and kept him captive at Thankaraj's residence at Pallikkara.

The accused threatened that he will harm the child if Jai Singh and his wife Suma complained to the police. A complaint was filed seven days after the incident and the police team led by V.K. Raju, sub-inspector, found the boy at Thankaraj's residence.

Three held for theft

Three persons were arrested by the Ernakulam Town North Police for robbing an engineering student of his gold chain and mobile phone after promising him a copy of question papers. Reji, 19, of Valappad was attacked on the night of June 15.

Those arrested have been identified as Naushad, 32, of Thundiparambu in Mattanchery, Jyobish, 19, of Vamanad and Asif, also known as Vella Mammali, 19, of Kappalandimukku in Mattanchery.

He was approached by the first accused when he reached Marine Drive after collecting his hall ticket from Toc-H Engineering College, where he is doing his undergraduate course.

On being promised a copy of the question paper of the examination, Reji followed the accused to a hotel in North, where he was attacked by the accused along with the other two. The complainant suffered a knife injury when he resisted the robbery.
