Security stepped up in district

Staff Reporter

Police officials instructed to make preventive arrests

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police have tightened security in the district in view of the dawn-to-dusk hartal call given by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the strike by motor workers on Wednesday to protest against the hike in the price of petrol and diesel.

Patrolling will be intensified in the district from Tuesday night to remove any roadblocks set up by hartal supporters.

The police have deployed policemen in plain clothes and stepped up patrolling to identify those who are likely to create trouble. Instructions had been given to officers to make preventive arrests, a top police official said.

Two additional companies of police will be deployed in the rural areas of the district and six companies in the city limits in view of the hartal and strike.

Full deployment of police personnel in the district will be made from Wednesday morning. The police will also provide escorts and pilots in cases where they are needed. Police presence will be high on all the roads leading to the Central Railway station, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus stand and the international airport.

The Superintendent of Police, Rural, P. Vijayan, who is also holding the charge of the City Police Commissioner, has issued a notice to the district president of the BJP in view of the High Court order banning hartals.

KSRTC buses to ply

The KSRTC will operate regular services on Wednesday. The chairman and managing director of KSRTC, K.P. Somarajan, told The Hindu that the KSRTC would operate more schedules on Wednesday to lessen the misery the commuters may have to face in view of the motor workers' strike.

The KSRTC had not sought any police protection for the services till 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

The KSRTC would review the situation on Wednesday morning and take appropriate action, Mr. Somarajan said.
