Inspection party attacked at demolition site

Staff Reporter

Razed property belonged to a retired SHO

NEW DELHI: A team of officials who had gone to carry out inspection of a demolished property belonging to a retired Station House Officer at Timarpur in North Delhi were pelted with stones by the area residents on Tuesday. Five persons sustained injuries in the incident.

According to the police, the area Sub-Divisional Magistrate, the tehsildar and some other officials had gone to the house of Mahender Yadav, who had retired as SHO from Jahangirpuri police station, at Burari Mor in Timarpur around 4 p.m. in connection with a demolition carried out a few days ago.

Some area residents apparently objected to the inspection being carried out. Following a brief altercation, the situation took a violent turn as the residents began pelting stones at the officials. While the officials escaped unhurt five other persons sustained injuries and had to be taken to Hindu Rao Hospital. The police, meanwhile, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

While initial reports indicated that supporters of the retired SHO had pelted stones at the officials, the police said they were yet to ascertain the identity of the people who started it all. Till late tonight, the police were conducting raids and rounding up suspects.

The High Court had a couple of years ago passed orders for demolishing certain portions of Yadav's house as it came in the way of a road-widening project. After the demolitions were carried out in accordance with the Court's order, Yadav had reportedly rebuilt the damaged portions.

The High Court again passed order to demolish the portions. The demolitions were carried out for the second time a few days ago.

Meanwhile, a case of rioting has been registered at the Timarpur police station and further investigations are on.
