Unscheduled power cuts in many areas

Staff Reporter

Capital records highest-ever demand for power

NEW DELHI: The Capital on Tuesday recorded the highest-ever demand for electricity when the Delhi Government's power transmission company -- Transco -- supplied 3,534 MW of power. Prior to this, the highest demand was 3,490 MW recorded last year.

According to a Transco spokesperson, the peak demand was recorded around 5 p.m. The demand was met by overdrawing from various sources including the Northern Grid.

Transco also resorted to a load-shedding of 174 MW mainly due to frequency problem in the Northern Grid. As a result, several areas remained badly hit during the day including Pappan Kalan, Najafgarh, Bijwasan, Jafarpur, Mangolpuri, Khampur, Jehangirpuri, Uttam Nagar and Shahdara.

Several residents also complained about long hours of unscheduled power cuts mainly due to alleged inefficiency of the field staff of the private power distribution companies.

"There was no electricity in our area throughout the day. Repeated calls to the complaint centre concerned and also to elected representatives failed to bring any respite. Power went off around 11 a.m. due to some cable fault, but the distribution company failed to respond swiftly, adding to our woes in this hot and humid weather," alleged Vinod Sethi, a resident of Lajpat Nagar-III.

Meanwhile, power supply in the Capital has also been affected due to shutting down of generating units at various power plants.

For instance, a 104 MW-unit at Pragati power plant was closed down for maintenance on Tuesday, while a unit at Raj Ghat plant has not being functioning since Monday. Moreover, a 62.5 MW-unit at Indraprastha power plant is lying shut for the past few months.
