BANGALORE: The Bangalore University Syndicate on Tuesday resolved to appoint only Ph.D. holders in teaching posts in the university and do away with conditional appointments. The Syndicate also approved an expert committee's recommendations on 25 readers and professors who were issued show-cause notices for not completing their Ph.D.s within three years of their appointment, as required.
Response to notices
Responding to the notices, seven of lecturers and professors submitted their theses, and six sought time till October/November this year to produce their research papers. Five lecturers and professors wanted to re-register for their Ph.D.s as their registrations had lapsed. The Syndicate approved the expert panel's recommendations to permit the lecturers and professors to go ahead with their plan. However, the Syndicate turned down the request of five others seeking a waiver of the condition related to Ph.D. It wanted the lecturers and professors to complete their doctorate degrees in the minimum possible time. Two others who had not fulfilled the condition had retired and the Syndicate chose not to pursue the matter in their case.
Visiting professor
The Syndicate approved a proposal to invite the Jnanpith award winner and litterateur U.R. Ananthamurthy to serve as a visiting professor in the University's Centre for Kannada Studies for two years. The request was made in view of the shortage of senior professors, many of whom have retired from the centre.
Request granted
It granted the request of Narayan Hegde, professor of English in the New York State University, to permit him to spend six months of his sabbatical on the Bangalore University campus. He wanted to translate into English the first Kannada play written in the 19th century, "Iggappa Hegde Vivaha Prahasana." Dr. Hegde will be based in the Centre for Kannada Studies.
