MADURAI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation for the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project on July 2 in the presence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief M. Karunanidhi.

A formal invitation will be extended to Governor S.S. Barnala and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa by Deputy Chairman of the Sethusamudram Corporation Limited (SCL), Union Minister for Shipping T.R. Baalu said here on Wednesday.

Releasing the SCL logo, Mr. Baalu extended an invitation to Ms. Jayalalithaa through the media. "I invite the Chief Minister to kindly participate in the SSCP foundation-laying ceremony as the guest of honour," he said.

All Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu will participate in the function for which the State Ministers, MPs and MLAs will be invited.

To a question, Mr. Baalu said he expected the State Government to allot land for construction of the project office. "If there is undue delay, then we will take some private land for the purpose." He reiterated that fishing would not be affected by the dredging work.

The draft of memorandum of understanding between the Suez Canal authorities and SCL has been approved by officials. The MoU will be signed after the approval of the Union Cabinet, he said.

The building plan of the project office, to be set up at either Mandapam or Rameswaram, was released on the occasion.

What the logo means

Rupesh Vyas, coordinator, Information and Digital Design, National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, designed the logo for SCL.

It has a green circle (with an abstract map of India) representing the globe. Two white bands represent the two-way channel and the upward direction of the channel stands for prosperity and growth. A green strap, in between the channels, represents the ecology of marine life.

Susheel Kumar, Joint Secretary, N.K. Raghupathy, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (SCL), Madurai Mayor C. Ramachandran and Madurai MP P. Mohan were present.
