More weavers in insurance scheme

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered the inclusion of an additional 50,000 weavers in the Bunkar Bima Yojana insurance scheme of the Life Insurance Corporation.

Already, 76,096 weavers are covered under the scheme in which the State Government pays the weavers' premium of Rs. 130. The Centre contributes another Rs. 150 and the LIC Rs. 100 for each weaver.

With the inclusion of more members, the State Government's total share for 1,26,096 weavers will be Rs. 1,63,92,480, Ms. Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

Under the scheme, the family of weavers who die before they complete 60 years of age will get Rs. 50,000. The family of those who die in accidents will get Rs. 80,000. Weavers totally incapacitated in an accident will get Rs. 50,000 and those partially incapacitated Rs. 25,000. — Special Correspondent

Grant to poor students

CHENNAI: The Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Trust has invited applications from students hailing from economically backward families for grant of financial assistance.

The Trust's Managing Trustee, K. Rajendran, said Rs. 2.25 lakhs would be distributed. Postgraduate students would receive Rs. 3,000 each; graduates Rs. 1,750 each and polytechnic or senior secondary students Rs. 1,200 each. Details can be obtained from the Trust office at Old No. 35, New No. 14, Fourth Main Road, Kasturba Nagar, Chennai 600020 by self-addressed envelopes affixed with Rs. 5 stamp. — Special Correspondent

Online appointments for visa applicants

CHENNAI: The German Consulate here will offer an online appointment service for visa applicants. All first time travellers, who are to file their application in person as well as frequent travellers, who wish to present their application personally, may avail of the appointment service. Appointments can be booked on-line with a minimum notice period of a day through the Internet page of the German Consulate-General and are given on a first-come-first served basis. Appointments can also be booked through TT Services offices throughout south India, says a release.

Pension to freedom fighter

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced the sanction a monthly pension of Rs. 3,000 to A. Gurusamy Reddiar, freedom fighter. This follows the representation given by Mr. Reddiar to the Chief Minister with a prayer for the pension in view of his poor economic condition, says an official release. A native of Pappaiyapuram village of Madurai district, Mr. Reddiar would also be given Rs. 15 a month as medical allowance. A sum of Rs. 3,015 would be provided to him every month throughout his life. Public Works Minister O. Pannerselvam would hand over the Government order to the freedom fighter. — Special Correspondent

Hindu Munnani demand

CHENNAI: The Hindu Munnani on Wednesday demanded that the police bring to book immediately those responsible for the murder of Hindu Makkal Katchi vice-president R. Kalidas in Madurai. The police could retain credibility among the public only if they took action urgently, the organisation's State organiser, Rama Gopalan, said (The deceased was a former Hindu Munnai functionary). — Special Correspondent Medical team at Aalampalayam

ERODE: A team of two doctors with paramedical staff and sufficient medicines rushed to N. Aalampalayam on Puliampatty-Tirupur Main Road and screened a number of people in the area. It was claimed that many complained of throat infections, - some even of throat cancer - developed allegedly due to consumption of borewell water over the last few years.

The doctors from Punjaipuliampatty and Ukkaram Primary Health Centres visited the village on Tuesday. The doctors examined 300-odd villagers. Water samples were collected from the borewell and dispatched to laboratory for testing. The officials and the doctors feel that water contamination could be the cause of throat infection. Medicines were granted to those affected. - Staff Reporter

SI arrested, remanded

ERODE: A sub inspector of police (SI), wanted in a rape case, was arrested and remanded to custody on Wednesday. According to the police, a 30-year-old woman of Mugasi Anumanpalli, within Vellode police limits, had preferred a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, P. Balasubramanian, on May 13, that the SI, Vellode Devaraj, had raped her.

A case was registered against the SI, who absconded. A special police team was formed to nab Devaraj, and the police had obtained an arrest warrant from the Judicial Magistrate, Perundurai Jaganathan. Devaraj was produced before the Judicial Magistrate who remanded him to custody for fifteen days at the Central Prison in Salem. - Staff Reporter

Increase in wages

RASIPURAM: Handloom silk traders have agreed to increase the weaving wages during negotiations with weavers here on Tuesday.

About 500 weavers came to the office of Rasipuram MLA and demanded that the MLA, P.R. Sundaram, hold talks with traders, from whom weavers got job work. - Staff Reporter

Governor inspects bridge work at Karaikal

KARAIKAL: M.M. Lakhera, Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, on Tuesday, visited the tsunami-hit areas of Pattinachery and T.R. Pattinam in Karaikal district and inspected the construction of a new bridge across the Arasalar. The Governor also saw the bridge that collapsed during the tsunami.

Dr. S. Sundaravadivelu, Collector of Karaikal, and others accompanied the Governor during his visit. The Governor also enquired about the arrangements being made for the Sani Peyarchi festival at Tirunallar. — Staff Reporter

Recoveries worth Rs.2 lakh made at Lok Adalat

Thanjavur: Spot recoveries to the tune of Rs.2,09,619 in various accounts were made at the Lok Adalat conducted by the Indian Bank, Thanjavur circle, on the court premises, here recently.

In all 58 awards amounting to Rs.5,77,700 were awarded in the Lok Adalat. The Adalat covered 360 non-performing accounts borrowers in the district.

About 75 borrowers turned up for the Lok Adalat, according to a press release issued here today.

The Lok Adalat was presided over by Arumugham, Sub-Judge, (retired).

The Deputy General Manager of Indian Bank, Sriramanan, spoke on the occasion. The Chief Manager of Indian Bank, Muthukrishnan, also took part. — Special Correspondent

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 53.22 feet today. The inflow was 347 cusecs and the discharge, 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
