BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Babulal Gaur on Wednesday announced that a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Union Carbide gas disaster would be built at the factory site which spewed tonnes of poisonous gas on the midnight of December 2 and 3, 1984, killing thousands of people. Mr. Gaur, who inspected the Carbide factory premises, said the Government proposed to convert the existing Union Carbide plant structure as a memorial dedicated to the victims of the industrial gas disaster. Models would be erected to replace the damaged structure of the plant, he said adding that Rs. 50 crores would be spent on building the memorial and developing parks around it. The Chief Minister said the industrial sheds that were used as temporary shelters for the gas victims would be developed as readymade garment manufacturing centres to provide employment to the affected families. This initiative would benefit about 7,000 people.
