Case filed against police for assaulting youth

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: A case against three policemen, including two head constables, has been registered for allegedly torturing a youth and using derogatory remarks against him and his family members.

Sources said A. Joseph (28) of Kallikulam was forcibly taken to the Valliyoor police station by Paulraj, another head constable and Bhaskar on June 19 after they received a complaint from Jayakumar, a marriage broker from the same area, who had stated that Joseph had robbed him of Rs. 40,000.

After removing his dress, the police allegedly thrashed Joseph.

"When my father, who has been admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital with heart ailment, called me over my mobile phone as I had been kept in the police station, head constable Paulraj denied permission to attend the call. Instead, he abused my father over the phone. They also abused my family members," Mr. Joseph told The Hindu .

Though the victim later proved that it was a false complaint, no action was taken against the complainant but Mr. Joseph was asked to leave the police station immediately. Fearing for his life, he went to Radhapuram and got admitted in the Government Hospital there to receive treatment for the injuries he had sustained in the "custodial torture."

"As a mini-bus operator flouted norms and operated buses in non-permitted areas, I filed a complaint with transport officials, who detained the bus. Consequently, unidentified persons attacked my house. But my complaint with the Valliyoor police was not entertained forcing me to approach the DIG for remedy, which might have infuriated the Valliyoor police," Mr. Joseph, who was discharged from the hospital this evening, said.

Though the victim preferred a complaint against the three policemen immediately after the incident, it was entertained only this evening and a case was registered thereafter.
