DAVANGERE: : The breastfeeding promotion week will be observed across the country from August 1 to August 7. The programme has a slogan: "DPT for baby, Copper T for mother." (DPT stands for Diphtheria Pertussis Tetanus.) The Chairman of the Breastfeeding and Lactation Management Committee of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Banapurmutt, told The Hindu here on Wednesday that women will be educated on the importance of administering the DPT vaccine to children and the advantages of using Copper T as a birth control measure for at least three years after having their first child. Dr. Banapurmutt said that through the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India units across the country, women will be educated on the importance of breastfeeding children for two years. Counselling camps for expectant mothers will held during the week to make them aware of the importance of using indigenous nutrient-rich homemade food in place of commercial baby foods. The 10th five-year plan of the Union Government (2003-2007) also aims at reducing infant and childhood mortality rates and improving the health of infants and children. Ten guiding principles have been framed on the nurturing of children up to two years of age and women will be asked to adhere to these principles, the doctor said.
