Students urged to help protect environment

Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA: The Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Narayanaswamy, has urged students to take active part in protecting the environment. Inaugurating a function to observe World Environmental Day at the Chitradurga Science Centre on Wednesday, he expressed concern over the growth of environmental pollution, which is resulting in global warming.

"We need people such as `Salumarada' Thimmakka who has made it a habit to plant trees. We should draw inspiration from them," he said. He suggested that awareness on the environment should be spread among students through dramas, debates and drawing competitions.

Mr. Narayanaswamy said that Chitradurga district has been selected for a Rs. 13-crore sanitation scheme by the Union Government. Speaking on the occasion L. Rangappa, Deputy Director of Public Instruction, urged teachers educate students on the need to protect the environment.

"The Education Department has already inducted topics relating to the environment in textbooks from class I. But such topics should be taught effectively," he said.

S. Mallikarjunappa, president of the Chitradurga Science Centre, and B. Rajesh, district environmental officer, spoke.
