THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With a view to meeting the ever-growing demand for electricity in Kerala in the coming years, several long-term measures have been initiated by the State Government. A 400-KV Power Highway, being built with assistance from the Central Power Grid Corporation, would ensure that the State received uninterrupted supply of electricity from the power stations under the Centre, in the event of a breakdown of the system here, said Aryadan Mohammed, Minister for Electricity here on Thursday. Talking to mediapersons on the performance of the power sector in the State over the past four years, he said it was poised for a giant leap forward in the coming year. By the next financial year, the State would require 4,307 MWs of electricity. However, not even half of it was being generated here. The 400- KV Power Highway extending from Kozhikode to Thiruvananthapuram, has been designed to draw electricity from the power stations at Koodankulam of Tamil Nadu and Kayamkulam in Kerala and to transmit it to various parts of the State. There is a 400 KV-sub-station already functioning at Madakkathara of Thrissur district. The work of a sub-station of an even capacity was fast nearing completion at Pallippueram of Thiruvananthapuram district. The Power Grid Corporation has already been assigned land for setting up a similar sub-station at Areekode near Kozhikode. At Pallikkara in East Kochi too, a 400-KV sub-station is soon to be built. Also, the survey on the Mysore-Areekode 400-KV line has been completed. To bring in electricity from Koodankulam, a 400-KV line would be provided, connecting Tirunelveli, Edamon, East Kochi and Madakkathara. Along with the augmentation of the capacity of the Koodankulam and Kayamkulam power stations, the Thiruvananthapuram-Edamon and Madakkathara-Areekode 400-KV lines would also be commissioned. Once all these works were completed, the Power Highway between Thiruvananthapuram-Edamon-Kochi East-Thrisur and Kozhikode would be a reality. Apart from being equipped to draw adequate power from the Central pool, this highway would considerably improve the efficiency of the transmission network in the State, the Minister said. Projects worth Rs.905 crores were in various stages of completion in the power sector in Kerala, under an intensive energy development scheme. The emphasis of this scheme was on improving the efficiency of the transmission-distribution network and also on bringing down transmission loss. It has been proposed to lay 4,000 kilometres of 11-KV lines to cover the entire State.
