Amusing

The editorial "Accusations that are over the top" (June 21) was amusing. What was wrong with the letter written by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee expressing concern over the peace process? Even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has admitted that Pakistan violated the bilateral understanding by allowing the Hurriyat leaders to visit Islamabad via Muzaffarabad. The Government has not even registered a formal protest over the breach. It is absolutely clear that only because Mr. Vajpayee wrote to Dr. Singh, the Government got an opportunity to clarify its position.

The fears expressed by the BJP that the Government's moves are not on the right track do not seem to be unfounded.

The Prime Minister's statement ruling out any role for a third party in resolving the Kashmir issue, though commendable, is far from practical. Forces that have at various points in time represented the aspirations of the people of Kashmir or shown interest in the issue cannot be completely ignored. As for the BJP, by finding fault with the peace process, it has reinforced that it is easier to make tall statements while in the Opposition.

The visit of the Hurriyat leaders has increased the credibility of Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan amid cries of `compromises' by the media. Secondly, while the Hurriyat leaders might have been given a warm welcome on the other side of the LoC, their claims and the ground realities are now more clearly exposed than ever before. This is sure to call for a paradigm shift from the Pakistani side on the question of who actually represents Kashmir.
