Letters to the Editor
Four years ago, petrol sold at Rs. 20 a litre and today it is around Rs. 45 a litre. The only remedy is to reduce its consumption. We should stop using private vehicles and travel only by town buses or trains. For short-distance travel, we can use bicycles or walk. Did not our ancestors travel to most places on foot? At least, we have buses and trains.
S. Siva,
* * * Petroleum price hike is all set to become a regular phenomenon like the annual floods in some rivers. The solution lies in a more realistic approach to consumption.
J. Dasgupta,
* * * Like all other things, the people will forget the oil price hike soon. Hikes are effected irrespective of regime change. But Governments are careful to resort to such moves even in the face of a dispute about the need to do so only when it is not election time.
M.A. Hakeem,
* * * The continuous burdening of users of petrol and diesel and sparing of kerosene/LPG users is hardly a sensible move. The ultimate objective of the Government is defeated because the users of petrol and diesel not only pay more but are also affected by the heavy pollution caused by the adulteration of petrol and diesel with kerosene. At this rate, the day is not far off when we will be at the mercy of politicians who continue to announce counterproductive, populist measures to gain votes.
R.S. Vasan,
