Registration may be made mandatory for imported cosmetics

Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Registration of imported cosmetics is likely to be made compulsory under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules to ensure quality control. A recommendation to this effect was made at the Drugs Consultative Committee meeting on Thursday.

The meeting had been organised by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation under the Directorate-General of Health Services.

Registration of imported drugs was made compulsory in 2003. A need was felt to have similar requirements for imported cosmetics also to ensure that their labelling and quality profile was in conformity with the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

It was suggested that registration of all cosmetics to be imported into the country be done after screening and charging a registration fee for each product. The modalities for incorporating the registration requirements in the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules would be worked out after the proposal is approved.
