Scribe among four held for auto-thefts

Staff Reporter

Worked for Hindi daily `Aaj' and `Jansatta'

NEW DELHI: A journalist working with a local Hindi daily at Muzzaffarpur in Bihar is among four persons arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for their alleged involvement in auto-lifting and burglaries.

The Anti-kidnapping Section of the Crime Branch had arrested two persons -- identified as Ravi Chauhan alias Dev Raj and Dalip Kumar -- in the Capital on June 8 and allegedly recovered 300 car keys from them.

During interrogation, they allegedly confessed to having been involved in more than 50 cases of auto-thefts and burglaries. At Ravi's instance, the police recovered stolen household items, clothes and electronic items from his rented accommodation.

The accused also revealed that they had links with dealers based in Muzzaffarpur to whom they supplied the stolen vehicles.

A police team went to Muzzaffarpur and arrested Sanjay Kumar Singh and Sushil Kumar on June 13. They too were brought to the Capital on police remand. Two stolen vehicles were recovered at their instance.

According to the police, Dr. Singh, who had completed his Ph.D in child psychology from B.R. Ambedkar University in Muzzaffarpur, had begun his career as a journalist with Hindi daily "Aaj".

He was appointed as Muzzaffarpur bureau chief in 1989.

In 1994, Dr. Singh came to Delhi and joined Hindi newspaper "Jansatta" as a reporter. Two years later, his mother suffered a paralytic attack after which he returned to Muzzaffarpur and worked with local daily "Prabhat Khabar".

In 2002, one Raj Nath Dubey introduced him to Ravi after which he began dealing in sale and purchase of stolen cars. Sushil was a driver who knew Dr. Singh and he joined the gang as a carrier of stolen vehicles to earn quick money.

The police said many gangs involved in sale-purchase of stolen cars were active in Muzzaffarpur and Siwan.
