BEIJING: Over 300 persons, including 80 children, were injured when two tonnes of waste explosives went off at a chemical plant in Taiyuan, capital of north China's Shanxi province, the state media reported on Thursday. Forty-seven persons among the more than 300 injured have been hospitalised. Four of them were seriously injured, but no deaths were reported, the Shanxi Provincial Bureau for Production Safety said. Among the injured were 80 children from a nearby kindergarten, the Xinhua news agency said. Due to high temperature, waste explosives stored at a small warehouse of the Shanxi Jiangyang Xing'an Civil Explosive Equipment Company caught fire, triggering a large explosion, the report said. The cause of the explosion was under investigation, an official from the Provincial Information Office said. The huge blast could be heard two kilometres away and shattered windows and temporary buildings. An area of three kilometres around the plant was cordoned off to protect local people. PTI
