KOTTAYAM: Representatives of various Hindu organisations, including the Akhila Bharatiya Ayyappa Seva Sanghom, Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam and the Kerala Vellala Mahasabha, have called for revamping the scheme prepared by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC) for development of roads in Erumeli town. At a meeting held at the Devaswom Auditorium in Erumeli on Thursday, the organisations pointed out that the scheme, if implemented in the present form, would affect Ayyappa devotees and the Travancore Devaswom Board detrimentally. One of the major drawbacks of the Rs.4.5-crore project is that more than Rs.1 crore is being spent on a new road from Koratty to Erumeli running parallel to the existing Kanjirappally road. Though the scheme has provision for two bridges on the road, the spots have not been specified. ``When the Orumkalkadavu Road, also envisaged in the scheme, becomes a reality, the new parallel road will become irrelevant,'' they pointed out. Instead, they wanted the widening of the existing main road from Erumeli to Koratty into a four-lane road. This will help people to make use of the existing bridges. They also wanted to use the money to develop approach roads from Karimbinthode parallel road via the temple compound and also by the excise range office. This will help ease traffic pressure on the holy path, they said. They also wanted an approach road for people to come to Erumeli from far off places such as Kaalaketti and Angel Valley. They wanted representatives of Hindu organisations to be included in future deliberations.
