Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Union Cabinet approved on Thursday an expenditure of Rs. 478.8 crores for establishing a transmission line to meet the power requirements in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
The project would take power from generating stations in Uzbekistan. The 220 kV double circuit transmission line would be laid from Tirmiz to Kabul via Pul-e-Khumri. It would be executed by the Powergrid Corporation of India and is estimated to be completed in three-and-a-half years. It would include the construction of a 220 /110/20 kV substation at Kabul. The entire expenditure would be in the form of a grant. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the project would serve as a catalytic agent to speed up economic rehabilitation and development of Kabul .
