GULBARGA: In a step towards achieving the goal of utilising the State's full share of Krishna waters under Scheme A of the Bachawat Tribunal Award, the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Water Resources Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, will dedicate to the nation on Sunday two medium irrigation projects: Ghattarga barrage and Yadgir barrage. The barrages have been constructed across the Bhima to utilise 2.26 tmcft of water and irrigate 3,825 hectares of land in drought-prone Afzalpur taluk in Gulbarga district, Sindagi in Bijapur district and Shahapur and Yadgir taluks in Gulbarga district. Both the barrages, constructed by Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam (KBJN), are among a series of barrages across the Bhima to utilise the State's share of 15 tmcft. The Kollur (B) and Joladadgi-Gudur barrages have been inaugurated. With the inauguration of the Yadgir and Ghattarga barrages, the State will be in a position to utilise 5.04 tmcft of water. The Government has increased the scope of the Sannati barrage and converted it into a lift irrigation scheme to utilise 4 tmcft of water to irrigate more than 17,000 hectares. Mr. Singh laid the foundation stone for the redesigned Sannati lift irrigation project on June 16. The Ghattarga barrage will also help solve the drinking water problem in more than 13 villages in Afzalpur and Sindagi taluks and provide a link between Gulbarga and Bijapur districts. In both the projects, farmers have to pump water from the barrages for irrigation as there is no provision for a canal system. The Yadgir barrage is designed to utilise 1.01 tmcft of water and irrigate nearly 2,000 hectares of land in drought-prone Yadgir and Shahapur taluks and provide drinking water to many villages on the banks of the river. The project, which was executed at a cost of Rs. 33 crores, will also provide a direct road link between the Yadgir State Highway and the Gulbarga-Yadgir State Highway without touching Yadgir town. The road will be thrown open to the public after the Railways completes the construction of an overpass near Mudnal village. The State Government has deposited Rs. 4.7 crores with the Railways for the construction of the railway overpass and the work is expected to begin within six months.
