Six employees charged with swindling funds

Audit reveals misappropriation of funds in Jagalur taluk office

DAVANGERE: The amount collected by officials of the Revenue Department from farmers to issue computerised title deeds under the "Bhoomi" project four years ago was not credited to the Government. Instead, three shiresthedars and as many clerks in the Jagalur taluk office allegedly misused the money.

This was revealed during an internal audit of the Revenue Department held here recently. The employees, who allegedly tried in vain to cheat the Government, have reportedly paid the amount.

According to sources in the Deputy Commissioner's office, Rs. 1.2 lakh was collected to issue computerised title deeds to farmers at the Jagalur taluk office.

According to rules, the amount collected should be deposited in a nationalised bank in favour of the Government.

It is said that the six employees took the money saying that they will deposit it in the bank. The next day, they reportedly produced a fake receipt showing that they had deposited the amount.

Warned of action

The incident came to light when the internal audit, which is done once in five years, was held at the office.

The district administration immediately asked the employees to pay back the amount failing which it warned that they will have to face action. It is said that they paid the amount.

Not suspended

"There is a shortage of staff and we cannot afford to place six employees under suspension," the sources said and added that all the six employees are trained in issuing title deeds, which will be hit if they are placed under suspension.

Hence, the district administration did not initiate action against the employees.

Report sent

However, a report has been sent to the Government in this regard, sources said and added that it is up to the Government to take any action against the accused.
