DGP opens police station building

KURNOOL: The Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, inaugurated the police station building and staff quarters at Yemmiganur town on Thursday.

The police station building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs and quarters at Rs. 35 lakhs. At C. Belagal, the DGP laid the foundation for a police station building.

Three killed in wall collapse

ANANTAPUR: Three persons, including a one-and-a-half-year-old girl, were buried alive in wall collapse at Hindupur in the district on Wednesday evening.

According to reports, a few poor families were living beside a road near Kalluru Subba Rao park by raising huts adjacent to a wall constructed in a private land to prevent trespassing.

A part of the wall collapsed due to gale. The dead were identified as Srinivasulu (36), Venkataramanamma (25) and Ganga. A woman, who was injured, was admitted to hospital. - Staff Reporter

Housing scheme

MADANAPALLE: Under the `Rajiv Griha Kalpa' scheme, 750 houses will be constructed in Madanapalle, according to B. Naresh Kumar Reddy, former Municipal Chairman.

Participating in a meeting here on Thursday, he said each house costs Rs.75,000.

Village secretary in ACB net

HYDERABAD: The village secretary of Pathikonda in Kurnool district, K.C. Anjaneyulu, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials on charge of accepting Rs. 897 bribe from a complaint on Thursday. The tainted amount was recovered from him, according to a press release. The accused village secretary was being produced in the Special Court for SPE and ACB Cases, Hyderabad. - Staff Reporter

Tractor driver killed in mishap

CUDDAPAH: A speeding tractor went off the road at Maddimadugu in Chintakommadinne mandal on Thursday and its driver, Sundar Raju, had a fatal fall in a bid to save himself.

Sundar Raju died and the cleaner, Devaraju, sustained injuries, according to the police. Both belonged to Satyavedu in Chittoor district.

The Chintakommadinne police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Olympic run conducted

KURNOOL: Olympic Run was organised in connection with the World Olympic Day here on Thursday.

The run originated at three places in the city and joined at Raj Vihar Centre. The procession at stadium was flagged off by the Municipal Commissioner, Venkateswarlu, at Silver Jubilee College by S.V. Mohan Reddy and at APSP campus by the Commandant, Bose Reddy.

The MP, Kotla Suryaprakasa Reddy, the MLA, S.V. Subba Reddy and the collector, Vikas Raj received the Olympic torch. They led the rally to the Outdoor Stadium. Addressing the rally, Mr. Subba Reddy said sports inculcated discipline in individuals.

He called for encouragement to rural sports persons.-Staff Reporter

Roll back petro price hike, Centre urged

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (ML) New Democracy has asked the Union Government to roll back the petro price hike.

The New Democracy central committee in a press note on Thursday asked the Left parties to make their stand clear towards the `anti-people' decisions of the UPA Government. The party said it would launch countrywide protests with the first demonstration being held in Delhi. - Special Correspondent

Farmers stage rasta roko

NIZAMABAD: Farmers of Kammarpally mandal staged a rasta roko and a dharna in front of the Single Window Society at the mandal headquarters town on Thursday demanding suspension of the society secretary, Raj Gangaram, who was allegedly indulged in corrupt practices in the distribution of maize seed.

They alleged that the official sold a bag of maize seed at Rs.180 instead of Rs.170. The Agriculture Officer, Madhavi, and the Sub-Inspector, P. Sivasankar Rao, rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the farmers. They relented only after the Agriculture Officer assured them of action. - Staff Reporter

Office-bearers elected

KHAMMAM: M. Venkateswar Raju and D. Koteswar Rao were unanimously elected the Andhra Pradesh Pay and Accounts Office Employees' Association president and general secretary.

R.V. Ramanarsaiah of Khammam was elected the organising secretary. S. Harnatah is the treasurer of the organisation. - Staff Reporter

Protest against delay in transfers

Rajahmundry: Employees working in District Medical and Health Department in Krishna, East and West Godavari laid a siege to the office of the Regional Deputy Director (RDD) from Wednesday night to Thursday afternoon. The employees, mostly health assistants, are protesting against delay in issuing transfer orders.

The Regional Deputy Director, V. Satyanarayana, assured the agitators of issuing orders. - Staff Reporter

Two farmers commit suicide

Sangareddy: Defunct borewells have forced two farmers in Medak district to commit suicide.

At Sikandalapur in the Sivampet police station limits, Cheguri Chanda Goud, 42, consumed pesticide on Wednesday and died, as he could not repay the loan taken to sink two borewells in his field.

At Katriyal village of Ramayampet mandal, Katrala Siddi Ramulu (40) committed suicide on the similar ground. - Staff Reporter

LAWCET rank cards

VISAKHAPATNAM: Rank cards along with option forms will be sent to candidates who appeared for LAWCET-2005 on July 15.

According to the LAWCET Convener, R. Venkata Rao, the option forms are meant to indicate the order of preference for admission to private colleges only. Candidates who desire to seek admission to university colleges/departments should apply in response to the notification to be released by the universities concerned. - Special Correspondent

Student ends life

Kakinada: Kummari Ramesh Babu (15), an SSC student of Muktesweram ZP High School, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Magapuvari veedhi in the Ayinavilli police station limits on Wednesday. It is learnt that the boy took the extreme step unable to bear headache from which he was suffering for long. - Correspondent

CITU demand

HYDERABAD: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has urged the Government to withdraw the GO No. 40 which halted inspections of industries for safety standards in the State.
