Councillors complain against non-release of funds

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A large number of Councillors from the Outer Delhi parliamentary constituency have petitioned the Member of Parliament, Sajjan Kumar, to intervene in view of the failure of the Rural Development Board to release funds to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to undertake development projects in rural areas of the Capital.

At a special meeting of the Najafgarh Zone on Tuesday presided over by Zonal Committee Chairman Ram Naresh Gupta, the Councillors said the failure of the officials to release funds to MCD had led to difficulties in executing various projects in the villages. Urging Mr. Kumar to take action in order to resolve the situation, these Councillors said elected representatives should be given more say in the development of various areas.

Mr. Kumar informed that the purpose of holding such a meeting was to discuss various local issues and projects that are people oriented and benefit the community as such.

Various issues like construction of roads, development of vacant land in villages for parks and playgrounds, beautification of village ponds and developing more cremation grounds and graveyards was taken up at the meeting.

The senior Congress leader said the Delhi Government had approved allocation of Rs. 69 crores to MCD for various development works.

Of this, Rs. 40 crores would be released by the Board on projects formulated by MCD, Rs. 15 crores to be spent as grant-in-aid and Rs. 4 crores would be spent on dairy development.

He asked the MCD officials to immediately send proposals of various projects to the Delhi Rural Development Board so that these could be taken up for approval during the next meeting.

He also stressed the need for better coordination between the Councillors and the area MLA in order to ensure smooth pace of development works.
