HYDERABAD:
The vigilance wing of the Transport Department on Thursday seized five private buses on various routes for paying insufficient tax. Another bus plying without a permit was also seized.
A surprise check was conducted by motor vehicle inspectors under the supervision of the Road Transport Officer, East Zone, B. Ram Kumar, near Ramoji Film City between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Over 150 vehicles were checked and 17 cases booked for various violations.
According to the transport officials, the five vehicles had not paid the requisite amount of tax and were found transporting commercial goods. "Some of them picked up passengers and dropped them at various places by charging money, which they are not authorised to do," an RTA official said. The vehicles were mostly plying on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada route.
Three vehicles were found with four extra seats. According to the norms, a private tourist operator has to pay Rs. 2,500 towards an extra seat per quarter for a 36-seater vehicle.
The owners of the five seized vehicles will have to shell out Rs. 60,000 each to get the vehicles released.
