ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has expressed "shock and sadness" over India's decision not to allow him to travel on the June 30 Muzaffarabad-Srinagar bus following allegations of his involvement in running a Kashmiri militant camp in the late 1980s. "The Indian Government decision to impose a ban on my travel to Srinagar has shocked and saddened me. It also frustrated people in occupied Kashmir who were anxiously awaiting my visit. The decision has upset my relatives in occupied Kashmir," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function. Mr. Rashid vowed to continue support to the "peaceful freedom struggle" of Kashmiris and hoped that one day he would visit Kashmir. "I have categorically said several times that I want to go to Srinagar on a private visit and it should not be made an issue," he said before the announcement in New Delhi of the rejection of his application. He said if the Indian External Affairs Ministry permitted him to visit, it would give him an opportunity to pray at the graves of his grandparents, besides meeting his relatives. He expressed the hope that his visit would help promote the ongoing peace process between Pakistan and India. Even if he was declined permission, the Minister said, this would not affect the ongoing peace process.
