Kolathur residents wait for pattas

"We are tax payers but basic amenities are still deplorable"

CHENNAI: Over 600 residents of Kolathur near Rettai Eri have urged the Government to provide them with house site pattas for properties that they have occupied for "the past several decades."

The residents, who were largely from the middle or lower income groups, said they had applied for pattas several years ago but were yet to get them.

P.V. Srinivasa Rao, president, Grama Natham Residents' Welfare Association said the lands fell under the category of "Grama Natham land." A survey was done in 1990-91 and in 1991, he had received a letter from the special officer, Town Survey Final Audit-Chennai North, stating that after the completion of audit, steps would be taken to issue the pattas. But nothing was done and because of the delay residents were unable to develop their properties as they could not get loans from housing companies or banks.

"The government agencies handling the patta issue now say that they have to get a GO," said V. Natarajan, another resident. "We seek a favourable decision soon from the Government as we are regular tax payers." The area is within the Chennai Corporation limits.

Adding to their woes is the condition of roads, especially the four Mada streets — Sannadhi Street, Bajanai Koil Street and Patasalai Street. A. Suryababu, another resident, said the storm water drains in some areas were choked with garbage.
