BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday stayed the election to the post of Mayor of Mangalore. Justice Rammohan Reddy, in his interim order, stayed the election on a petition by Balakrishna Shetty and another. The petitioners questioned the rotation of seats and said it is illegal, arbitrary and contrary to the law. The petitioners said the post of Mayor has again been reserved for Backward Class (BC -A) category though it had been reserved the last time. They said there was no proper rotation of categories. The Judge said the issue of rotation and reservation of seats is under challenge and a Division Bench is hearing the issue. He also stayed the election to the post of Mayor scheduled for Monday.
Mood upbeat in Mangalore
Our Mangalore Special Correspondent reports: At the Mangalore City Corporation office, the mood was upbeat. Unmindful of the High Court order, candidates were scurrying around their respective leaders. The Congress leaders are distancing themselves from the candidates and the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. janardhana Poojary, is camping in Delhi, and the former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, is in Bangalore.
