KATHMANDU: Nepal's Government fighting the Maoist insurgency in the kingdom has asked donor countries, including India and the U.S., to extend support to finance its increasing expenditure for peace and security. The Finance Ministry, which is soon to finalise the budget for the coming fiscal year, starting mid-August, briefed major donor countries and international donor agencies about the budget plans and also sought cooperation from them to meet the increasing expenditure for peace and security in the kingdom, state-owned The Rising Nepal daily reported on Saturday. Finance Secretary Bhanu Prasad Acharya met Ambassadors of major donor countries, including India, France, the U.S., Germany and China to brief them about the budget. He called on the multilateral donor agencies to extend necessary cooperation in the budget for giving continuity to the economic reforms programmes of the Government, the daily said.
Rebels storm army checkpoint
Hundreds of Maoist rebels stormed an army checkpost in the far southwest, sparking fierce clashes which left at least three persons dead, the army said on Saturday. The army launched an air and land counter-attack after the raid late on Friday and intense fighting continued until dawn Saturday, army spokesman Gopal Thapa said. The Maoists, fighting to replace the monarchy with a one-party communist state, usually carry away their dead in a bid to conceal the identity of the guerrilla network. There was no immediate rebel comment and no independent confirmation of the casualties. The rebels and army are believed to routinely exaggerate enemy death tolls and underestimate their own to keep morale high among their forces, analysts say.
