Veerasamy joins issue with Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Joining issue with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on her statement on the Sethusamudram Canal Project, DMK treasurer N. Veerasamy said she had never spoken on the project or its possible environmental impact in the last four years.

In a statement here on Saturday, he said the implementation of the project was among the achievements during the one-year rule of the United Progressive Alliance Government headed by Manmohan Singh and due to the efforts of the former Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi. However, due to heartburn that if the project materialised the DMK-alliance would corner the credit, the AIADMK Government was putting stumbling blocks by not issuing the no-objection certificate. But overcoming these hurdles, the Union Forests and Environment Ministry had accorded sanction for the project. The Centre had also cleared the Rs. 2,427-crore project.

Unable to digest that a massive function was to be held on July 2 under the presidentship of the Prime Minister and in which several top leaders including the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, were to participate, the Chief Minister had criticised Union Minister T.R. Baalu without any reason.
