KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has decided to acquire 500 acres to create an IT hub, three times the size of the present one at Salt Lake, state Information Technology Minister, Manab Mukherjee, said. The new hub would be located between the airport and the upcoming township at Rajarhat on the city's eastern fringes. "The state cabinet on Thursday approved the IT department's proposal to acquire this land which would be developed through the public-private partnership mode," the Minister said adding that global bids would be invited within this year for selecting consultants for this project. Indications were that the IT minister would make a short visit to Bangalore soon to `talk to some 20 Bengali IT entrepreneurs' there. Admitting that the state was a late entrant in the IT scene, departmental secretary, G. D. Gautama, said the city was now trying to benchmark itself against cities like Shanghai and Hong Kong regarding IT facilities. He claimed that West Bengal had a low attrition rate since loyalty to employer was part of the culture. Earlier, the minister launched a Rs. 150 crore project called Globsyn Crystals promoted by software solutions provider, Globsyn Technologies Ltd (GTL), in association with two real estate groups. The project envisages the creation of `an attrition-free work environment for the IT sector'. GTL envisages building a project with six lakh sq. ft. of space which will house not only IT industries but also value-added after-work facilities for the employees.
